Project Log

At Projectman, we know that details define the whole. While status reports focus on major milestones, the Project Log captures the heartbeat of daily work. It is where operations meet documentation. It serves to record progress, time spent, and minor insights that would otherwise get lost in endless email threads or morning stand-ups.

Why keep a Project Log?

The Log is an ideal tool for both the project manager and team members who need to maintain an overview of what is actually being worked on and how much effort it requires. If an entry appears in the log that requires action, can it immediately become the basis for a new Task or an open Issue?

What data points do we track in the log?

  • Activity Description & Responsibility: A clear record of who worked on what. This is crucial for team transparency and essential for any future project post-mortem or retrospective analysis.
  • Progress & Outcomes: The template allows you to track the percentage of completion for ongoing tasks. This gives you an immediate overview of whether things are moving forward or if the project is "stuck in place."
  • Resource Consumption (Time Spent): Tracking time in Man-Hours (MH) or Man-Days (MD) is essential for budget control and efficiency. It allows you to see in real-time how fast you are "burning" through resources compared to the plan.
  • Deadlines & Status: Clearly marking whether a task is "Done" or specifying its expected completion date assists the PM with operational planning for the upcoming days.

Projectman’s Field Recommendations

The level of detail in the log should always be set by the Project Manager at the start. We don't want to drown the team in micro-administration, but we need facts in hand.

Important Note: If your organization already uses a specialized task management tool (e.g., Jira, Asana) or a time-tracking system (Timesheets), there is no need to duplicate this data in the log. In such cases, the log serves primarily as a tool for qualitative commentary and insights from the implementation process that don’t fit into standard tracking tools.

At Projectman, we believe that if it isn't documented, it didn't happen. With the Project Log, you will always have clear evidence of the work performed and a valuable foundation for evaluating the ultimate success of your efforts.
